Happy 102nd Birthday President Ronald Reagan!

One of my favorite Reagan quotes is:

“All great change in America begins at the dinner table.”

Happy 237th Birthday U.S. Marine Corps! (Video)

237 years go on Nov 10, 1775 during the American Revolution, The U.S. Marine Corps was established by the Continental Congress. In war and peace these brave individuals make sacrifices far beyond what most of us appreciate. In the name of freedom, they give up the comfort and convenience of civilian life in order to protect our rights and liberties. Without their devotion to duty and dedication to freedom there simply would not be a United States of America.

Be sure to check out this fantastic interactive timeline of the U.S. Marine Corps with lots of photos and history.

Happy 237th Birthday U.S. Navy! (Video)

As a grandchild of a former Navy Admiral, I echo the sentiment below…

The Heritage Foundation notes

Today, we commemorate and give thanks for the sacrifice and service of the men and women in uniform of the U.S. Navy.

On October 13, 1775, Congress authorized the procurement of two armed vessels to search for British ships supplying munitions to the British army in America. Today, the Navy continues to be a force for good, advancing and securing interests of this grateful nation and its allies around the world.

Over the years, the Navy has evolved to the finest maritime force among all nations. Its members have fought with distinction by sea and land. They have secured U.S. interests and promoted peace, stability, and the values of this great country and other civilized nations abroad.

The U.S. Navy is the key guardian of the world’s prosperity. Today, about 90 percent of global commerce is conducted by sea. The U.S. upholds the principle of freedom of the seas to promote and protect commerce among nations. The U.S. men and women in uniform willingly place themselves in harm’s way to fight those who endanger the principles we all hold dear.

More than 321,000 Navy active-duty personnel and over 107,000 active reserves are ready to fight evil wherever it occurs. Some of these men and women are away from their families, deployed to some of the most unforgiving areas on the planet. They deserve our unwavering support and the tools they need to ensure victory now and in the future.

Happy Birthday Milton Friedman! (Video)

The great Libertarian economist Milton Friedman would have been 100 years old today. I have posted items about Milton Friedman before at this link. Above, you’ll find a video that Reason TV put out last year in celebration of Milton Friedman’s 99th birthday which Nick Gillespie so eloquently tells us about the man’s accomplishments.

Below is an excerpt of an appreciation of Milton Friedman by economist Stephen Moore which you find in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Moore writes:

It’s a tragedy that Milton Friedman—born 100 years ago on July 31—did not live long enough to combat the big-government ideas that have formed the core of Obamanomics. It’s perhaps more tragic that our current president, who attended the University of Chicago where Friedman taught for decades, never fell under the influence of the world’s greatest champion of the free market. Imagine how much better things would have turned out, for Mr. Obama and the country.

Friedman was a constant presence on these pages until his death in 2006 at age 94. If he could, he would surely be skewering today’s $5 trillion expansion of spending and debt to create growth—and exposing the confederacy of economic dunces urging more of it.

Happy Birthday Mr. Friedman!

Happy 64th Birthday Israel!

Stay united & strong.

Via the AP:

Israelis celebrated their country’s 64th anniversary Wednesday with fireworks and military processions at a national ceremony in Jerusalem.

The festivities came immediately after Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of militant attacks, an annual ritual of twinning grief with elation and pointing out the link between the two.

Preparations for Independence Day were marred last week when a lighting rig collapsed during a rehearsal, crushing a young soldier to death.

Speaking at the official ceremony, Parliament Speaker Reuven Rivlin cautioned against extremism of all stripes, naming ultra-Orthodox Jewish zealots, ideologues who burn mosques and activists who delegitimize the state as “those who threaten the future of Israeli society.”

Government statistics showed that Israel’s population grew by 137,500 since last year to 7,881,000. The Central Bureau of Statistics said 75 percent of the population is Jewish and 21 percent is Arab. The remaining 4 percent represents tiny minorities or immigrants who are not Jewish.

Traditional Independence Day celebrations include dancing in city streets and family cookouts in national parks. Some military bases open Thursday for visits, and Israeli cities host open-air concerts in honor of the holiday.
