The Electoral College is under attack from Democrats including right here in Virginia. They think the Electoral College is unfair but, is it really? Here’s why the Electoral College exists. This is an excellent summary from CNBC.
Around 138 million people voted in the 2016 election, but 306 people officially elected the president by using their electoral college votes.
Democrats have been busy passing the National Popular Vote Compact bills in various states. Virginia is joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC) to bypass the electoral college and to award all their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the overall popular vote in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
About 1/2 the population lives in these blue areas across the country. Under the National Popular Vote Compact, the votes in the blue areas weigh more than the votes in the red areas. For example, in 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 2.9 million votes. She won California by 4.7 million. Why should one (1) state determine the election? The Electoral College protects the minority states votes and ensures all people have a voice – one vote, one voice (see this link too).
